WHOIS returns domain registration information: the registrar, registration date, expiry date, nameservers, and domain status codes. Since GDPR, personal contact information for individual registrants is often redacted. Business registrants may still show contact details.
RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the modern, JSON-based replacement for traditional WHOIS plain text responses. It is standardized (RFC 7480-7484), supports HTTPS, internationalized domain names, and structured data. All major registries now support RDAP. This tool uses rdap.org which routes to the correct registry for each TLD.
EPP status codes describe the domain state. Common ones: clientTransferProhibited (transfer locked), active (normal operation), pendingDelete (expiry countdown before deletion), redemptionPeriod (expired but renewable at a premium cost). Multiple statuses can be present simultaneously.
